North Western & Central Franklin County

St. Albans Town and City, Fairfield, Swanton, Highgate, Sheldon, Bakersfield and Enosburg

These communities are located in the north western and central part of Franklin County. This area of Vermont is known for its agriculture and tight knit communities. Franklin County borders Canada, and residents can enjoy the beauty and country living that these towns offer, while being an hour from the vibrant and lively city of Montreal. 

St. Albans

The county seat of Franklin county, St. Albans is comprised of two incorporations: St. Albans City and St. Albans Town. The town surrounds the city, and is located on the shores of Lake Champlain. St. Albans town is home to Kill Kare State Park, and the Bay Town Park. The town is comprised of many single family home neighborhoods, condo and townhome neighborhoods, lake front homes, and a diverse array of single family homes tucked away on private land. The City of St. Albans is home many parks and amenities in the area including the Hard 'ack recreational area, Aldis Hill Park and the charming and ever growing downtown district. The city is comprised of many historic homes, as well as condo and townhome neighborhoods, and multi-family homes. 

Route 7 and Interstate 89 run through St. Albans, making it an easy place to travel and communte from. The town boarders Swanton, Fairfield and Georgia. Smugglers Notch resort is approximately 30 minutes from St. Albans. Outdoor recreation options in St. Albans continue with the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail, offering over 26 miles of biking, running, walking, hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. 

Downtown St. Albans features many small businesses and amenities including, movie theater, museum, restaurants, shopping gyms, and much more. The popular Taylor Park is nestled in the middle of the city and displays Civil War and World War I memorials, along with a centerpiece fountain. In addition to it's rich history, Taylor Park is also a lovely place to stroll and relax in during the summer months. The park is a central meet up spot for fitness groups and it hosts the Northwest Farmers Market from spring through early fall. 

St. Albans City hosts the annual Vermont Maple Fest each spring, an event that brings in visitors from all over the State. The Maple Fest features a variety of food related contests, vendors and the Sap-Run. Strolling down the main street of the city, residents and visitors are sure to notice the preserved historic charm of the buildings, as well as new construction that has contributed to reviving this charming city.

Fairfield

Fairfield is located in central Franklin County. Neighboring the towns of Fairfax, St. Albans and Georgia, Fairfield is a quaint and rural town. Route 36 runs through the town, and the town center consists of The Brick Store, Chester's Bakery and the town library. The town is largely known for its dairy farms and maple production, with lots of larger producers. Fairfield is also the birthplace of US President Chest A Arthur. 

Residents and visitors can enjoy the Fairfield Pond, a scenic spot that is nestled in the countryside, surrounded by rolling hills. Smugglers Notch Resort is about 30 minutes from the town, and the larger Jay Peak Resort is about an hour away. St. Albans is the nearest city to Fairfield, located just 10 minutes away. Fairfield is comprised of mainly historic and older homes, on private land, as well as farms and some newer single family homes. 

Fairfield is home to the Soule House and Carriage Barn, a historical estate and wedding venue with picturesque views and a fish pond on the property. 

Swanton

Located in the north western corner of Franklin county, Swanton is a growing town with a village center. Believed to be the earliest area in Vermont to have been inhabited by humans, much of the earliest inhabitants were native Abenaki, a history that continues to be celebrated in Swanton today. Lake Champlain is directly to the west of Swanton, and I89 is to the east. Swanton is home to the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge. Maquam Shore Road stretches from the neighboring town of Saint Albans, up through Swanton, and provides access to many seasonal and year round homes along the lake, as well as Swanton Beach. 

The town of Swanton boasts a country landscape, while the village provides many amenities for residents to enjoy including grocery stores, shops, services and restaurants. Swanton provides many housing options including condo and townhome neighborhoods in both the town and village, single family homes, older historic homes, and some farmhouses. 

Highgate

One of the most northern towns in Vermont, Highgate is located directly south of the Canadian border. The town is rich in agriculture including dairy farming and egg producing. Highgate is home to the Tyler Place Resort, an all inclusive lakefront resort. The town is less than an hour from Montreal, Canada to the north, and 45 minutes from Burlington to the south.

 

Sheldon and Bakersfield

Situated in the heart of Franklin County, Sheldon and Bakersfield are small towns that boast an abundance of country living. Sheldon and Bakersfield are just 20 minutes from the Canadian Border, 15-20 minutes from St. Albans and about an hour from Burlington. Outdoor recreation isn't hard to find in these towns, as Smugglers Notch Resort and Jay Peak Resort are nearby.

 

Enosburgh

The hub of northeastern Franklin County, Enosburgh is comprised of two areas: Enosburg and Enosburg Falls. There's an abundance of sights to see in Enosburg, including the Bridge of Flowers and Lights and Abes Cabin. Enosburg is home to the Enosburg Opera House, Franklin County's historic home of performing arts, community events and cultural activities.  Residents and Visitors can enjoy a variety of parks and trails found throughout Enosburg. The town center provides many amenities including restaurants, grocery stores, banks and other services. 

Enosburg is only 15 minutes to the Canadian Border. Situated toward the east, Jay Peak Resort is less than an hour from Enoburg, and Smugglers Notch Resort is just 30 minutes south of the town. Enosburg has a scenic 18-hole golf course, which is open to the public.
